Altogether six Macassar residents were left displaced after a raging fire gutted a backyard home in the Riverside community. The incident occurred at a residential property on the corner of Ring and Link avenues on Thursday (2 February). According to Jermaine Carelse, spokesperson for the City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Services, Macassar and Somerset West firefighting crews responded to an emergency call of a dwelling alight at 00:22. Carelse said two fire engines were dispatched to the scene, where the staff complement found an informal structure on fire. “The informal structure was completely destroyed and the formal dwelling sustained partial damage,” he said. “A total of six people were displaced. The cause of the fire is unknown and no injuries were reported.” Following the blaze, a call for locals to assist a family that lost everything in the devastating incident with donations of clothes, food, bedding, toiletries and household items was distributed on social media platforms.DistrictMail & Helderberg Gazettemanaged to obtain contact details for the suspected fire victims, but numerous calls in an attempt to reach out for comment went unanswered.
