A Strand bodybuilder with hopes of one day donning gold and green and flying the South African flag, will be one step closer to his sporting dream as he will be showing off his competition-worthy physique on the national stage next month. Sterling performances in the Western Province Natural Bodybuilding Championships on Saturday 20 August not only earned Toufeeck Barends his provincial colours, but the opportunity to compete in the South African Natural Body-building Championships set to take place on Saturday 1 October. The accomplishment is but one among a list of bodybuilding achievements, which the 26-year-old obtained so far for this year alone. Barends earned top spots by showing his mettle in numerous previous competitions. Apart from clinching fourth place at the provincial championships, the bantamweight-division (under 65 kg) contender earned third place in the David K Classic Bodybuilding Competition, fourth place in the Iron Man Bodybuilding Competition and second place in the SA Development Championships. Barends started to gym with friends as a 16-year-old and would often be advised to take up the sport of bodybuilding by many who recognised his potential. Now he has discovered his passion, he strives to be selected
