Mayoral Committee member for Human Settlements Councillor Carl Pophaim handed 58 title deeds from the City over to beneficiaries and their families in Lourensia Park, Somerset West on Friday 6 October.

“The City is committed to enabling redress and will hand many more over in other areas of the metro,” the City said in a statement. “Earlier this year the Human Settlements Directorate handed 92 title deeds over to residents of the housing project.

“The City’s Human Settlements Directorate’s mission and commitment are focused on delivery land reform that works,” said Pophaim. “We are enabling redress and transformation, and we are making our way to more areas where title deeds will be handed over to rightful beneficiaries. The Lourensia Park housing project is a special one and provides affordable housing to 150 families.

“Our Human Settlements Directorate is creating a space where no resident is left behind. Our title deeds programme is extremely important as it empowers the beneficiaries as property owners with access to tenure in order build a life that fulfils their hopes and dreams.

“We thank the community City teams and project steering committee for their work and working with us. We will ensure our brand-new home owners receive programmes educating them on the responsibilities of their new homes in terms of financial management, maintenance, how to draw up wills and all manner of household and family planning.

“I am dedicated to leading a Human Settlements Directorate that is accessible and transparent in its work, focused on the fair and just delivery of opportunities for all residents,” he said.

The selection of beneficiaries for housing projects is done in accordance with the City’s Allocation Policy and the City’s Housing Needs Register to ensure housing opportunities are allocated to qualifying beneficiaries in a fair and equitable manner that prevents queue-jumping.
