The Gordon’s Bay Islamic Society (GBIS) held a ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of a mosque and Islamic centre on the corner of Lancaster and Roos streets on Sunday 30 October. The event was attended by senior Islamic scholars and supporters from various parts of the country. GBIS chairperson Cassim Peer reminded those in attendance that the ground-breaking event was the culmination of eight years of effort since the purchase of the land, and the community was excited and elated that they will have a dedicated place of prayer and worship at last. Moulana Abdul Khaliq Ali (pictured), deputy president of the Muslim Judicial Council (MJC), congratulated the community on reaching such an important milestone in the development of the infrastructure and facilities for the Muslims of Gordon’s Bay. He advised them to be beacons of enlightenment, peace and harmony for all the residents of Gordon’s Bay and surrounds.
