Sunny skies, no wind and thousands of beach goers welcomed the third leg of the Hot Summer of Touch Series held in Strand on Saturday 16 December.
A total of 59 teams took part in easily the biggest touchies tournament held in recent years.
“With that number of teams, it was impossible to run plate competitions and additional play-offs in order for all teams to play more games, and sadly a few teams went home feeling they didn’t quite get their money’s worth. The Hot Summer of Touch is cognisant of this fact and will continue to do what it can to improve the overall value, that players receive when entering a tournament,” organisers said in a statement.
Once again the action was fierce from the outset with many of the local Strand teams upping their games in front of the home support. The crowds and majority of spectators were commended for the way they remained composed even with so much pride being at stake. This really was a feature and augurs well for the future of the series.
The Liberty Webb Touchies took a firm grip on the overall trophy by taking on and conquering the defending Strand champions, the Score Forward Legends in the final. It was an epic final which saw some brilliant tries and a final score of 2-1
The Challenger Series was won by the Grapevine Blizzards who beat the Last Kingz in the final. The Open Division was won by Team Targo Touchies and the Junior section was won by the Score Forward Reds Juniors who overcame the Score Forward Legends in the final.
Overall, it was a great day and organisers thanked the City of Cape Town, Ward 83 Councillor Carl Punt, Strand Surf Lifesaving Club, and the many who worked so hard to ensure this event’s success.
- The roadshow now continues on to Macassar on Wednesday, 20 December (today).
