Passionate snake catcher Blackie Swart is dedicated to ensuring the safety of both humans and snakes in the community.

“It all started with a fascination,” he said. “Over the past 10 years his hobby has become a full-time commitment to snake rescue and relocation.”

The work of Blackie Swart Snake Relocation Services 24/7 goes beyond immediate safety concerns. “Snakes play a crucial role in controlling pest populations,” Swart explained. “Their presence is vital for maintaining a healthy ecosystem.”

He not only removes snakes from residential areas, farms and public spaces, but also works to relocate them safely, minimising disruption to the local environment.

While donations are always appreciated to help cover the costs of running the service, its primary focus is on education and awareness.

“Understanding snakes and their behaviour is key to reducing fear and promoting coexistence,” Swart said.

Blackie Swart Snake Relocation Services is hosting a series of educational talks to raise awareness about snakes, their role in the environment and how to live safely alongside them. “These talks aim to dispel myths and promote a respectful approach to wildlife,” explained Swart. “Unfortunately, due to regulations, live snakes cannot be included in the talks, but a compelling slideshow and pictures will be used.”

What to do when you encounter a snake:

Keep calm: Keep children and pets away from the snake. If the snake is inside, close the door and place a towel under it to trap it in the room. If outdoors, maintain a safe distance (at least 3 metres) and keep your eye on the snake.

Call a professional: Contact Blackie Swart Snake Relocation Services for safe removal. If possible, take a photo of the snake to help identify the species.

Do not engage: Never try to catch, provoke throw objects at or kill a snake.

Snake bites: In the rare event of a snake bite Swart emphasises the importance of remaining calm and seeking immediate medical attention for oneself or one’s pet. Treat every snake bite as potentially venomous, remove jewellery and pet leashes, and get to the nearest hospital or vet as quickly as possible. If possible, try to remember the appearance of the snake, but medical staff will prioritise treating symptoms regardless.

By supporting Blackie Swart Snake Relocation Services and attending the educational talks the community can play a vital role in fostering a safe and balanced environment for both humans and these important members of the ecosystem.
