Team Most Wanted Touchies celebrated a successful debut at the Host Summer of Touch.

Newly established beach touch rugby teams in the Helderberg are adding to the already dominant list of local squads participating in the annual Hot Summer of Touch series, the latest additions are Most Wanted Touchies of Strand and Garden Warriors of Somerset West.

Hadley Robertson, team manager of Most Wanted, said the squad was established in 2021 and comprises players between age 16 and 34.

“Our goal for the season was to gain promotion to the Pro Series, which we pulled off successfully after finishing at the top of the Challenger Series,” he said.

“The guys know each other as they mostly live in the same street in Strand, which has helped them become a force to be reckoned with against other teams.

To cover costs associated with participation, the team members hosted fundraisers to cover travelling costs, playing kits and entry fees. “We are really proud of what we have achieved. Hopefully this team will grow from strength to strength,” Robertson added.

Garden Warriors, founded last year, is made up of players from Garden Village, Lourencia Park and Helderzicht. The players boast years of experience, playing beach touchies for other teams.

“They have mostly played at pro level and decided to start a team in the community,” said club chairperson Quinn Dampies. “Our ultimate goal is to build a strong base and start a sports foundation. We are a young team open to new players. We want to create a legacy for players to come up through the ranks.”

Garden Warriors played in the Hot Summer of Touch Open division in December and impressed with sharp performances to reach the semi-finals at some tournaments.
