A 26-year-old Lwandle man has been sentenced to 25 years imprisonment for murdering his teenage half-brother during a domestic dispute at their Asanda Village home.

Sethu Mahlanyana was found guilty of fatally stabbing his 18-year-old sibling in the early hours of the morning about six months ago.

The victim died upon arrival at the nearest medical facility.

The two half-brothers, who shared the same father, had been involved in a domestic dispute before the fatal attack occurred at their shared residence.

Detective Sergeant Wynand Carelse of Lwandle police immediately launched an investigation, leading to Mahlanyana’s swift arrest. During interrogation, the accused confessed to the murder.

Following multiple court appearances, Mahlanyana was sentenced in the Strand Regional Court on Monday 10 November on two counts: murder (25 years imprisonment) and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (10 years imprisonment), with three years suspended for five years on condition he is not convicted of attempted murder, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, or assault during the suspension period.

The sentences will run concurrently, and Mahlanyana has been declared unfit to possess firearms.

Lwandle police station commander Lieutenant Colonel Mlamuli Voyiya commended Detective Sergeant Carelse’s efficient investigation work.
