Police officers seized two firearms including an imitation firearm (pictured), during the investigation launched following the incident.

Two teenagers have been arrested following the discovery of a firearm at a secondary school in Macassar on Monday morning (3 November), prompting a police investigation that uncovered additional weapons.

Macassar police officers responded to reports of a learner in possession of a firearm at around 09:30 on Monday. On arrival at the school police were met by Metro Police officers at the principal’s office, where they encountered a learner found to be carrying an imitation firearm.

“While busy interviewing the learner it was brought under the attention of the members that one of the learners had a firearm on Thursday, 2025-10-30,” provincial police spokesperson Capt FC van Wyk explained. “It was said that there was a video that circulated showing how they played with the firearm in class.”

The second firearm and ammunition seized during the police operation.

The revelation prompted an immediate escalation of the investigation, with police conducting follow-up interviews with additional learners at the school. “A follow-up was done and learners were brought to the principal’s office,” Van Wyk related, “which led to a search of three addresses in the Macassar area.”

“Members arrested a 17-year-old female drop-out, [believed to be] the girlfriend of the learner, and a 16-year-old male learner. Both will be charged for illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.”

The teen suspects were due to appear in the Somerset West Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 5 November on the above-mentioned charge.
