A mural workshop involving members of Representative Council of Learners (RCL) of Zandvliet High School was presented by City of Cape Town Arts and Culture on Saturday 20 May. Its purpose was to educate learners on the importance of celebrating Youth Day. Thirteen Zandvliet learners attended the RCL workshop, in which they had to draw different interpretations of Youth Day messages. Afterwards, two learners, Lionel George and Raylan Janneke, together with an artist, created an eye-catching and meaningful mural. Completed on Wednesday 14 June, its message is understanding the true meaning of Youth Day and why it is celebrated. The learners wanted to bring across, especially, the meaning of the struggle of the youth who fought and lost their lives fighting for equal education. Also involved here were Lauren Mentoor, who leads the RCL at Zandvliet High, along with Mrs N Rhoda. The mural will be seen as locals enter the Civic Centre in Macassar.
