A project to clean up the informal settlement known as The Eagle, where many homeless individuals have erected structures along Brewery Road in Strand, was initiated on Thursday 13 July, with the aim of taking place every Thursday thereafter.

The clean-up project entailed clearing the properties of litter and rubble and ensuring a safe and hygienic space to live.

According to Bevan Alloys, Operational Manager at Turn Around 180, the local non-profit organisation behind the project, it was done in collaboration with members of the Nuwe Lewe Gemeente Church.

“Turn Around is also busy with social-dignity projects within that community, which includes assisting the homeless with ID books, grants and social reintegration. We hope this latest project will add value to the services offered to the homeless and make a difference in the communities around them,” said Alloys.

He also appealed to the community to assist with cleaning items such as plastic bags and sanitiser to assist with the weekly clean-up campaign.

Turn Around 180 is situated at 28 Michau Street in Van Ryneveld, Strand, and can be contacted at 074 785 9979 or 084 250 6081.
