While the official first day of school for many little ones may have been daunting or even challenging, with some of them shedding tears, the start of the academic year was easy-peasy for others who successfully seized the day. One of these champions who were ready to take on the first day of “big” school was Nicol Potgieter who was eager to start his schooling at Lochnerhof Primary School in Strand. Potgieter, like other Helderberg learners, was among 1.2 million learners and 93 000 Grade 1s who embarked on the academic year at public schools in the Western Cape on Wednesday 17 January. Provincial Minister of Education David Maynier expressed gratitude for the 28 600 teachers and 7 300 public service staff members employed at schools this year, supporting learners daily. Maynier further appealed to parents to ensure that their children are at school every day, on time, ready and willing to learn. “Our officials and schools have been working hard to ensure that we are ready for the new school year, by procuring R49 million in textbooks, R24 million in stationery, R17.5 million in furniture and R2 million in equipment, so it is all systems go for the new school year!” he said.
