Dozens of families affected by the severe flooding in Sir Lowry’s Pass Village and Macassar in September last year were given a much-needed boost when they were handed gas stoves and gas canisters at a handover function hosted by the International WeLoveU Foundation at Sir Lowry’s Pass community hall on Thursday (18 January).

The WeLoveU Foundation, founded in South Korea and active all over the world, announced that the dedicated humanitarian initiative was aimed at providing essential relief to the affected communities.

“This event is not just about delivering physical aid, but also symbolises the unity of our community in the face of adversity,” the foundation stated.

“The foundation expresses gratitude for the continued support of community leaders and is looking forward to the collective impact this initiative will have on the lives of those affected by the floods, as the community rallies together for a cause that transcends individual boundaries.

Jacob Kang of WeLoveU explained the foundation is a global non-profit organisation committed to addressing the diverse needs of communities worldwide.

“With the heart of a mother the foundation aims to create positive social change and promote the well-being of humanity, having undertaken several projects in Cape Town over the past couple of years,” he said.

The Area East Head for Disaster Risk Management (DRM), Onele Ndesi, thanked the foundation and mentioned that the DRM volunteers provided crucial assistance during the floods.

“We are grateful and appreciate this gesture. We thank the foundation of behalf of the City for helping our communities becoming more resilient.”

Xolani Williams of the Human Settlements department also extended a word of thanks and encouraged the community to take full advantage of the help they are receiving.

One of the benefciaries, Grace Davids, said that her family of four had completely lost everything during the floods. “It’s been a major struggle and I have been constantly so stressed. This donation will make a big difference in our lives and I pray that may God bless the sponsors for helping us,” she said.

Another beneficiary, Wilma Titus, said the road to making a full recovery from the disaster may be long, but this handover was set to make things a bit easier.

“I am very grateful and thankful for everything that is being done to assist us,” she said.
