The life of Krynauw Serdyn, who would have turned 19 years old last Thursday (19 January), was remembered with a clean-up of the Lourens River at Goedehoop in Strand on Saturday 21 January.
Family, friends, neighbours as well as members of the Strand Neighbourhood Watch and Helderberg Ocean Awareness Movement (Hoam) all came together, as they do every year, to remember Krynauw and his passion for the environment and nature.
The 12-year-old tragically died in 2016, after being shocked to death while playing outside in the rain. He was a learner at Hendrik Louw Primary at the time.
But the day was not about the heartbreaking passing of Krynauw; it was rather a celebration of his life and legacy of caring for nature, and this was honoured by cleaning the banks of the Lourens River to prevent pollution as well as clearing all the rubbish in the vicinity.
Krynauw’s parents, Jessie and Hennie Serdyn, expressed gratitude and thanks for all those who supported the cause, and were impressed by the dozens of plastic bags containing all the rubbish collected from the river banks.
The annual cleaning event has already been confirmed for next year.
