Repairs to the sewer pipe and subsequent roadworks along De Villiers Street in Strand is ongoing as the City of Cape Town has stated it is unable to confirm exactly when the works will be completed. Since last year the City has spent R888 450 just on works in De Villiers Street alone, where the aging Trappies Sewer Network is breaking apart and causing sinkholes. This one, the latest of multiple sewer breakages in Strand, occurred a month ago and has resulted in noise and air pollution complaints from nearby residents. “The nature of the work on deep excavations does take time, but it is important and necessary for the City to complete it,” stated Zahid Badroodien, Mayoral Committee member for water and sanitation. “We assure residents we are doing everything we can to complete this work as soon as possible.”Photo: Yaseen Gaffar
