On Friday (30 May), neighbourhood-watch groups collaborated with security companies and police for a joint mass visibility patrol. The operation, which emphasised unity and partnership, gathered approximately 100 people with 50 vehicles and five motorcycles in Victoria Park. The Victoria Park Neighbourhood Watch (VPNHW), which hosted and initiated the event, provided refreshments and eats for all participants. Lieutenant-Colonel JP du Toit, visible policing head at Somerset West Police Station, briefed the group and led the operation alongside Captain Charles Riffle and sector commander Rico van Deventer. The patrol began in Victoria Park, proceeded through Lourensia Park, then continued to the N2 highway. Police officers in four vehicles ensured safe passage for the convoy as it travelled along the N2 toward Sir Lowry’s Pass and the Helderview area. The entire operation lasted about three hours. During the debriefing Du Toit thanked all companies and organisations for their participation in the successful operation, with special recognition to VPNHW chairperson Ben Venter, who organised the event. Participating organisations and businesses inclu- ded Victoria Park, Lourensia Park, Paardevlei and Helderzicht neighbourhood watches, AfriForum Helderberg, Gordon’s Bay Security, Vetus Schola, Secure Rite Security, AM Security, Helderberg Crime Watch, ADT Fidelity, Bay Guard Security, Community in Blue Sir Lowry’s Pass, City of Cape Town Law Enforcement and Somerset West police.
