The Personal Trust Classic 5’s Bowls Tournament was again played during the weekend of 18 and 19 November at Somerset West Bowls Club with sixteen teams consisting of five bowlers per team playing fours, trips, pairs and singles matches during the two days.
This annual highlight on the calendar of Somerset West Bowls Club was again made possible due to a generous sponsorship by Personal Trust and was well attended by 16 teams from clubs in the Western Province and Boland with Mark Gibbs, Director of Personal Trust, also entering a team.
The competition was fierce with three rounds being played on each day. On Saturday two rounds of Fours and Singles were played with one round of trips and pairs. The competition was concluded on Sunday with two rounds of trips and pairs played on the day. The final results were in the balance, right up to the final heads of some of the matches during the last round.
In the end the team from Somerset West Bowls Club of Fred Kruger, Jacques du Preez, David Cuff and Chris Blom lead by Team Captain Tina Grey walked away with the spoils and first prize.
They were followed by Allan Nell’s team from Somerset West, in which Allan as Team Captain played with Fiona Nell, Ken Nell, Gareth Nell and Mitch Ferreira. They came second to Tina Grey’s team on shot difference with both teams finishing on 65 points for the tournament.
The combined team of Stefan Koen, also from Somerset West Club, playing with Nick Byrne, Taz Bright, Ettienne Malherbe and Tina Grobler came in third finishing on 64 points. The team from Oakdale under the captaincy of Gavin Carter came in fourth with 60 points.
This event has now established itself as one of most prestigious bowling events on the bowls calendar in the Basin, with 16 team captains selected and invited by Somerset West Bowls Club each year.
