A man from Macassar was handed a 12-year prison sentence for a murder he committed in March 2021.
Sergeant Suzan Jantjies, spokesperson for Somerset West police, said Roshwin Moos (30) from Macassar was sentenced for the murder of Lwazi Sokhutu (31) from Nomzamo in the Somerset West Regional Court on Monday 23 January.
The murder was committed in the vicinity of a popular shopping centre in Main Road, Somerset West.
“On 3 March 2021 the police were contacted by Helderberg Hospital about an unknown man brought in with a stab wound to the left side of his chest,” Jantjies said.
“No information about the deceased man was available and the docket was transferred to Detective Sergeant Thembinkosi Sonjani of Somerset West police.”
The detective was elated when a breakthrough in the case came a year later, when a man from Macassar, Moos, was positively linked to the murder.
Jantjies confirmed Moos was arrested on 7 March last year.
“It is believed the deceased and accused had an argument that led to the stabbing incident,” she said.
According to Jantjies, Sonjani, together with the state prosecutor, opposed bail throughout the murder trial.
Somerset West police station commander Colonel Jacolize Fleischmann commended Sonjani for the outstanding investigation and for ensuring Moos remains behind bars.
