The threat of an intruder on one’s property and taking one’s belongings became a reality for four Helderberg residents over the past two weeks.
Two house break-ins and a home invasion occurred in Gordon’s Bay, while Strand police confirmed a house break-in was also reported in the neighbouring suburb.
The latest house break-in occurred at between 02:00 and 03:00 at a residence in Augusta Street on the Fairview Golf Estate in Gordon’s Bay on Saturday 18 November.
A spokesperson for Gordon’s Bay police said the intruders apparently forcibly opened a sliding door to gain access to the residence and steal items. A case of house break-in is under investigation.
“Fingerprint experts were on the scene to lift prints, and if any matches are found we will be notified,” the spokesperson said.
Three days earlier (Wednesday 13 November) burglars gained access to a property in Karee Street by breaking the lock and proceeded to steal items from an informal dwelling. Gordon’s Bay police confirmed a case of house break-in and theft is under investigation.
Another home invasion occurred in Drommedaris Street, Gordon’s Bay, around 03:00 on Sunday 10 November. The suspect managed to escape.
Information surrounding this case is unclear, but the spokesperson said that in an attempt to getting away, the intruder threw a brick at the homeowner’s dog, killing the pet.
The spokesperson police confirmed a case had been opened, but an arrest was still forthcoming. “The case is still under investigation, but we cannot provide additional information at this stage,” he said.
In the incident in Strand, a resident narrowly escaped harm during a house robbery in Hangklip Street around 22:45 on Saturday 9 November.
“The victim spotted a bottle of alcohol on the counter of his braai room,” said Strand police spokesperson Warrant Officer Nico Beukes. “Moments later an 18-year-old suspect jumped from behind the counter and lunged at him with a knife.”
The victim reacted quickly, using a chair to shield himself, and the suspect fled.
The resident gave chase, and Strand police apprehended the suspect a few doors away. A case of house robbery was opened and the investigation is ongoing.
