A R6,6 million water infrastructure upgrade is transforming Strand’s water supply, with 2 163 m of ageing pipes being replaced to deliver improved reliability and service to the local community.

New underground water pipes are being installed along Aerodrome Road, as well as Da Gama, De Mardt, Du Buisson, Nieuwenhuys, Henning, Bosman, Claassens, Roux and Benade streets. The 45-year-old fibre cement pipes (75 mm to 150 mm diameter) are being replaced with stronger high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipes (110 mm to 160 mm) designed to last 50-plus years.

The project, undertaken by the City of Cape Town’s Water and Sanitation Directorate and running from Wednesday 20 August to Friday 12 December, uses advanced trenchless pipe-cracking technology. The product minimises disruption to residents and businesses; protects driveways, trees and landscaping; reduces construction time versus traditional methods; and avoids interference with other underground services

The original water mains were installed 45 years ago and had reached the end of their design life. The undersized pipes (75 mm) couldn’t meet the current demand (100 mm minimum) and were prone to frequent bursts, causing service disruptions for residents.

“This investment in the Helderberg forms part of our strategic focus on key growth areas,” said Zahid Badroodien, Mayoral Committee member for Water and Sanitation.

“As part of our infrastructure-led development approach R239,5 mil-

lion has been allocated this year to replace around 50 km of water pipes region-wide, including critical Helderberg upgrades.”

The improvements will reduce leaks, improve reliability and prepare for continued sustainable growth. Strand can expect 3 017 m of pipe replacement planned for Volsteedt, Broeksman, Roelofse, Primarius, De Neyssen, Palm, Du Toit, Meyer and Dam roads.
