It was a dream come true for Macassar teens Ethan Swartland, Roscoe Julius and Jaydin Steenkamp when they joined the SA contingent of touch rugby teams that flew to Nottingham in England for the Youth Atlantic Touch World Cup tournament on Sunday 16 July. Another local, Caydin Lewis, flew out earlier that day. The players were selected in December last year for the squad and at the time some had organised fundraisers and made a plea to the community to help them raise the funds required to make the trip (“Help Macassar touch star jetset to UK”, DistrictMail & Helderberg Gazette, 21 December 2022). “We are extremely grateful to everyone who supported us and made this trip possible for the boys,” one of the parents said. The inaugural Atlantic Youth Touch Cup will be hosted at the University of Nottingham from Thursday 20 to Sunday 23 July. The event will feature teams from across Europe, South Africa, the USA, the Cayman Islands and China as well as seven teams from England. It is expected to be the largest international Youth Touch event this year.
