Three promising young golfers from Sir Lowry’s Pass Junior Golf Development proudly represented the Helderberg at the prestigious GolfRSA Nomads Rose Bowl Championship, the biggest junior girls’ tournament in the country, held at Durbanville Golf Club on Monday 31 March and Tuesday 1 April.
Na-eema Hearne (13) of Sir Lowry’s Pass Primary School, Zoe Arendse (14) of Somerset West Private School and Cleo Delport (14) of Hottentots-Holland High School competed in the silver division, marking a significant milestone for the development programme.
This was the first time any of the programme’s juniors participated in a national event, and their presence alone signaled a major step forward for the initiative. Their results, among the top 25, was also an indication of their capability on the big stage.
“These girls have worked incredibly hard and their participation at this level will only help accelerate their growth as players,” said coach Josh Bezuidenhout, who heads the Sir Lowry’s Pass Junior Golf Development programme and has also served as a coach for the South African Golf Development Board (SAGDB). “This is only the beginning for them – they’ve got the talent, the drive, and the potential to go far.”
Bezuidenhout also emphasised the broader vision for the programme, which includes a boys’ squad of equal promise. “Our goal is to see our boys and girls competing on the big stage. The success of Na-eema, Zoe, and Cleo is inspiring, and we’re working hard to ensure many more from our community follow in their footsteps.”
The achievement of these young athletes reflects not only their individual dedication, but also the growing impact of grassroots golf development in underserved communities. With strong mentorship and growing exposure to high-level competition, the future looks bright for the Helderberg’s rising stars.
The girls also participated in the WP Nomads Junior Girls Championship at Somerset West Golf club on Thursday 3 and Friday 4 April, where Na-eema won the prize for Best Nett round 1 score and Cleo obtained fourth place in Best Nett round 2 score.
