Duty crew of the National Sea Rescue Institute’s (NSRI) Gordon’s Bay station and Strand Surf lifesavers on the scene where they recovered a body at Strand Beach on Monday (14 November). An NSRI spokesperson said they were alerted by a lifesaver, who had been informed of a body adrift by a fisherman. “We recovered the body and handed the scene over to police,” said the spokesperson. Somerset West police confirmed the incident around 18:00 on Monday evening. “An inquest docket has been opened after the decomposed body of an unidentified person was adrift,” police stated. The find came after two teenage boys had presumably drowned off Strand Beach on Saturday 5 November (“Tragic end to beach outing,” DistrictMail & Helderberg Gazette, 9 November). The body of one of them was found in the surf while an extensive search for the other missing boy was initiated and unsuccessfully resumed the following day. The deceased was identified as Siqhamosethu Mndayi (17) from Delft, who apparently went swimming with his missing friend on the fateful day. On Tuesday morning (15 November) it was still undetermined whether the second body found was that of missing Limnandi Ngqoboka (15), also from Delft.Photo: Jamey Gordon
