WEDNESDAY 31 DECEMBER
๏ผSomerset West: ST PETER’S CATHOLIC CHURCH in Strand celebrates its 120th anniversary with a “Dancing through the Decades” New Year’s Eve event at Somerset West Town Hall. The popular dance band, The Elginaires, will provide entertainment for the evening, with guests encouraged to dress up in a costume from their favourite decade and take along their own snacks and drinks. The church has served as the mother church of the Helderberg region for 120 years, growing from a simple 80-person structure to a complex that now includes a 200-person capacity church, presbytery, hall and gardens. The grounds also house the former Catholic Loreto Primary School, which was founded by the Loreto Sisters, but has since been handed over to the government as a public school on private property. As part of the church’s anniversary year fundraising efforts, the church aims to raise R70 000 specifically to revarnish the historic knotty pine ceilings. Tickets for the dance cost R250 per person and are available through Webtickets, with more information available on the St Peter’s Catholic church Facebook page. Alternatively, interested persons can call Merle Falken on 082 558 4919.
