The Cape Winelands Surfing team has wrapped up a highly successful year, adding a bronze medal at the South African Masters Championships to their impressive achievements.

The championships, held at Long Beach in Kommetjie, concluded on Tuesday 21 October, where the team’s strong performance secured them a third place nationally.

The feat follows their earlier victory at the prestigious Vic Bay Quad earlier this year (“Stand-out performance for Cape Winelands surfers”, DistrictMail & Helderberg Gazette, 14 May).

Mat Marais, team manager and director of the Cape Winelands Masters team, lauded the exceptional spirit within the squad. “The camaraderie and team spirit were at the next level,” he remarked.

With three decades of surfing experience for both Boland and Winelands provinces, Marais has witnessed a significant shift in team members’ overall demeanour. “I’ve seen a big shift in the last couple of years, with surfers who are hungry to better their game and succeed. Having a support system within the district definitely helps.”

The Winelands team’s success at the SA Masters Champs was a collective effort, with most surfers reaching the quarter-finals or semi-finals and accumulating crucial points for the team. Notable finalists from Cape Winelands included Geoffrey Greeves (over-35), Richard Heath (over-50) and Geoff Johnston (over-60).

The team’s consistent hard work and mutual support culminated in their well-deserved bronze medal.

The Winelands surfing community now looks forward to the next event, the Closed Champs, where 2025 club champions will be crowned.
